From May 10 to June 22, 2024
g · gallery presents a solo exhibition by the Barcelona-based artist Alessandra BB.
Through a series of expressive self-portraits and surreal figurative pieces, Alessandra explores the complex theme of building relationships not only with other people but also with our own bodies, which inevitably change due to natural reasons such as pregnancy or aging.
The human body becomes the focal point of this exploration. The deliberate physicality of her works symbolizes internal transformations, and physical contact serves as a metaphor for emotional intimacy. Creating and preserving memories is an important concept in Alessandra BB's artistic research. She treasures and preserves in her works the memories created by each relationship. Alessandra BB's pregnancy memories transformed into an impressive artwork, "9 Months." Each character represents a specific period of gestation, showing different levels of interaction with the baby in the womb.
What makes this work extremely personal is the use of textiles. The fabric scraps, threads, and embroidery carefully incorporated into the artwork are pieces of the clothing Alessandra wore during her pregnancies. She could no longer wear them. Those garments felt useless. But Alessandra intended to preserve them in some way, transforming them into a work of art.
"There are clothes we hide. They hold too many memories to get rid of them, but wearing them again is also too painful. Clothes sometimes remind us of moments we will keep in our souls forever, but we need to learn to let them go," explains Alessandra.
The theme turned out to be so profound that it became a performance, “My Fabrics,” which is in some ways a meditation and therapy, a study of letting go. For 2 weeks, Alessandra BB will be present in the gallery, listening to the sounds of her childhood, tearing her clothes into strips, hand-weaving her new emotions from the old fabrics. Mentally, she will revisit her past while transforming her beloved old clothes into a large textile artwork. The work will be exhibited in the gallery during the final week of the exhibition.
